Royal Veterinary College select Apogee to reduce their print costs by 35% with new printing capabilities for enhanced security.

The Background

The RVC’s Managed Print Services (MPS) agreement with Apogee was due to be coming to an end. The organisation, who run a predominantly HP based fleet of devices with a mix of free-standing and desktop models, were looking to update their existing fleet to become more accommodating for both staff and students at the college.

The existing fleet was aging and in some areas, devices had been used very heavily. A major aspect within the fleet which RVC were keen to change was tightening their security protocols as some of the weakest points on a network can be within a print device. This was a great opportunity to implement a new fleet that would incorporate newer technology whilst delivering better uptime for the users.

The Solution

The RVC decided to renew the agreement following a yearlong analysis of what Apogee could provide. RVC staff paid numerous visits to Apogee’s facilities to view the proposed equipment in action and so they had a further understanding of how it would work at their facilities.

Important decision criteria were the level of services available, and the three pillars of HP PageWide print technology – sustainability, security, and innovation. The RVC is also looking into HP 3D print technology, which could facilitate and accelerate learning by printing 3D representations of animal skeletal systems.

The Outcome

With this latest roll-out, the fleet has now reduced by a further 20 machines, with corresponding cuts in power charges, carbon emissions and from utilising HP SDS monitoring this has also reduced call-out times. Thanks to the pop-up reminders, colour printing has dropped from 40% to 29% and security has been improved by introducing world-leading HP printing security technology which means jobs will no longer lie uncollected.

The college now runs four regular print-related reports that supply a picture of overall print usage and how RVC can have more of a positive impact on the environment. By doing so, they are now able to fully control and monitor their print habits around the clock. The RVC’s overall print costs have reduced by 35% since implementing a more cost-effective agreement, and following their renewal with Apogee, RVC’s future plans include the ability to scan documents direct into the Moodle learning platform and use printer screens to display marketing videos.
