Prime Minister says technology will ‘create a better future’ – and he’s right

At London Tech Week 2025, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer spoke about the role that AI will play in creating a better future for the UK’s public services, particularly the NHS.

This week, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a £1 billion investment in AI infrastructure at London Tech Week 2025. The move is intended to improve Britain’s public services, such as the NHS.

Starmer emphasised that this AI integration is for enhancing human capability, rather than replacing it – using it to eliminate administrative bottlenecks, whilst still promoting the human expertise required for complex planning decisions. Particular attention is being placed on the healthcare sector, with AI being used to speed up discharges from hospitals, and, in more specialised situations, locating blood clots in the brain in a micro-second, or working in combination with stethoscopes to predict potential problems.

However, as exciting as these prospects are, AI has its limits – and needs the proper support in order to be implemented effectively into hospital operations. Let’s explore a few:

AI is not compatible with paper-based documentation

The potential for what AI can bring to organisations is undeniably exciting – but its capabilities will naturally be limited if you’re still working with paper-based records. That’s why, if you’re hoping to develop alongside AI, digitising your archives is absolutely crucial.

While there are options available for scanning high volumes of documentation quickly, it’s more advisable to look into a solution that integrates digital capture software. This is because it effectively ‘reads’ what it scans, extracting important data from your paper records and presenting it in a format that’s easy for AI to read, understand, and process.

If you’re an NHS Trust looking for some social proof on the benefits of digitisation, check out our case study with Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Trust.

AI can make mistakes

AI is not infallible, and can make mistakes – which is why it’s absolutely vital for patient safety that all data is staff-verified before it’s fed into your given AI platform. But worry not: you’ll still be able to benefit from enhanced productivity and data accuracy, with the help of automation.

By having important documentation processed through automation software, you shrink the administrative burden from hours to minutes, since information should only need to be checked by your staff in the final stages. This gives you the confidence and assurance that, when it comes time to feed this information into your AI platform, you’re only providing it with accurate data to further enhance your operations with – while saving yourself time in the process!

Northumbria NHS Trust are an example of an organisation who easily integrated automation into their operations.

Keeping AI data searchable

AI is capable of generating a lot of data in a matter of seconds, but without the proper digital support in place, it can be easy for information to slip through the cracks, or be misplaced. For the purposes of compliance, general access, internal security, and effectiveness, the generative power of AI should be tempered by the organisational structure of proper document management practices.

A Document Management system provides the required structure to keep AI-generated data easy to search, locate, back-up, and protect – enabling operational agility throughout your organisation, and enhancing the quality of patient care you can provide. Automatic audit trails are particularly helpful for keeping track of document journeys, making it easy to demonstrate compliance if required.

Protecting your better future

With faster processing power, more accurate data, and a wealth of better-informed insights thanks to AI, keeping this information continually safe against external threats should be a massive priority for the NHS – and these days, that means housing information in the Cloud.

By moving away from in-house servers in favour of a Cloud provider, you put your AI-powered data under the continual protection of state-of-the-art tech and ongoing monitoring. If you’re not sure about how to choose, or get started with a Cloud provider, guidance is available with Cloud Services.
