Apogee’s People & Culture Team volunteer this World Environment Day!
To recognise World Environment Day on 5th June, Marion Brooks, Chief People Officer at Apogee, and the People & Culture Team headed to Communigrow in Kent to spend a day volunteering. Hear more from Marion below!
“The People & Culture Team and I were delighted to spend a day with Communigrow – a Maidstone-based charity committed to promoting and teaching the local community and schools about the benefits of growing local, fresh, and affordable produce in an organic and sustainable way.
“Our day kicked off with an overview of Communigrow and its purpose, along with a briefing on Health & Safety and our allocated projects for the day.
“Then it was time to put on our gardening gloves and dive in! The team all worked incredibly hard to prepare a few areas for raised planting beds, painting the Communigrow office and welfare room, and helping to assemble a structure for a new tent – a place to hold events and educational experiences for the community.
“We all learnt so much about sustainable growing and produce during our time with Communigrow – and it made a refreshing change to be away from the desk! There are just so many benefits to volunteering. Of course it is a fantastic way to support the environment and local communities with a ‘hands-on’ approach, but there are also other benefits that can sometimes be overlooked.
“For example, volunteering is hugely beneficial to our mental and physical wellbeing – from being out in nature and breathing fresh air, to moving our bodies, and the sense of achievement you get from completing a project alongside members of the local community – it’s such uplifting and rewarding work.
"It’s also a brilliant way to strengthen the bonds with your colleagues and to get to know them better! The day was full of fun, teambuilding, and finishing every project and challenge we were faced with!
